Training camp is usually this closed-off thing. You get clips on social media, maybe a press conference quote, and you piece together what happened from people who were there. But Saturday the Ravens did something that actually mattered to the people who love this team.

They packed up Day 4 of training camp and moved it to SECU Stadium on the University of Maryland campus. Away from the Under Armour Performance Center. Out of the practice bubble and into a real stadium where real fans could sit in real seats and watch.

If you've never been to an open training camp practice it's hard to explain what it feels like. It's not a game. It doesn't count. But there's this energy that builds when thousands of people show up just to watch their team run drills. Just to be in the same building as the guys they'll be screaming for every Sunday from September through January.

That's the whole point. Dave Morgan would probably tell me I'm being sentimental about what's essentially a marketing event, and maybe he's right. But I'll die on this hill. When a team picks up and moves its practice to a college campus so more fans can attend, that's a franchise saying we see you and we know you're the reason this whole thing works.

The Ravens have always had one of the best fan bases in football and I don't think that's debatable. Baltimore shows up for this team in a way that feels different from a lot of places. There's a grit to it and a loyalty that runs deep, and you could see it in the crowd that filled SECU Stadium for a Saturday practice in August.

I keep thinking about the kids who were there. The ones wearing Lamar jerseys two sizes too big, watching their hero throw passes from twenty rows up. Maybe one of those kids picks up a football tomorrow and starts throwing in the backyard. Maybe one of them tells their friends about the time they saw the Ravens practice live. Those moments don't show up in a box score.

You can read the full sights and sounds from Day 4 over at Ravens Wire, and you should, because they captured the day better than I ever could from here.

But what I keep coming back to is simple. Football is nothing without the people who love it. The Ravens know that. Saturday they acted like it.
