OK so a ranked list of the best Dexter episodes just dropped and I have feelings, mostly good ones! Because say what you want about how that show ended (and everyone says things, loudly, constantly), the good stretches of Dexter were genuinely great television and someone finally went through and picked the 15 episodes that prove it. You can read the full ranking right here.

What I love about this kind of list is what it argues underneath the ranking itself. The best Dexter episodes, according to the writeup, are the ones that actually sat with the morality of the whole thing. Like, the show's premise is a serial killer who only kills other killers, guided by a code his cop dad drilled into him, and the great episodes are the ones where that premise gets shaky. When the code bends. When Dexter feels something he can't label in a blood slide. When the people around him get close enough to the truth that you can't breathe.

And the list covers the whole run, which takes guts, because Dexter has maybe the widest quality gap of any prestige-ish show ever. Seasons one through four are basically a masterclass in tension. The Trinity season alone... I won't spoil where its big episode lands on the ranking but you can probably guess it's high, and it deserves to be, because that season finale broke people in 2009 and it still breaks people on rewatches in group chats today. I've seen it happen. I've been the person sending the clip with no context.

Then the later seasons happened, and we don't need to relitigate all of that, but even the weaker years had standout hours, and the list does a nice job fishing those out instead of just stacking the top four seasons and calling it a day. The revival, New Blood, gets its moments too. Some of those late-series episodes are genuinely haunting in a way that echoes the early seasons, when the show remembered that the scariest thing about Dexter was never the kills, it was the loneliness.

I keep coming back to that part honestly, the loneliness, because it's the reason this show stuck with people for so long and the reason lists like this one keep getting made. It was never really a gore show. It was a show about a guy pretending to be human, slowly discovering he might actually be one, in the worst possible way. The best episodes understood that. The kills got you in the door, but the ache was the actual story, and that's why we're still arguing about it.

Anyway. Go look at the ranking, then immediately rewatch whatever took the top spot, then text your group chat about it. That's the correct order of operations, and I will not be taking questions.
